Rolling Blackouts Across South Africa
ESKOM, South Africa’s national utility company, called a stage three power emergency last Thursday leading to rolling blackouts to stabilize and reduce demand as the grid comes under strain.
Eskom stated that: ”The power system is very tight. This risk has increased significantly due to the heavy rains over the last few days and an increase in technical problems experienced at some of Eskom's power stations."
They called for consumers to turn off as many appliances as possible in an effort to ease the situation.
Eskom spokesperson Andrew Etzinger admitted: ”The situation is stable at the moment - at this stage there are no power cuts planned.”
The problem has resulted partly due to heavy, persistent rain, with coal supplies for electricity generators becoming wet.
Saving energy by managing energy use is vital to curtail disruption of the power supply throughout the rest of the week.
